Business Objects
Business objects are the layer underneath your operating system. Most companies don't have one, and AI is about to make that expensive.
Pull up your CRM. Now open your finance system. Then your project tool, your support platform, your data warehouse. Ask each one a simple question: who is this customer? You'll get five different answers. The CRM knows them as an Account with an owner and a renewal date. Finance knows them as a Billing Entity tied to an invoice. Support knows them as an Org with a ticket history. The warehouse has three rows with slightly different spellings of the same company name. The project tool calls them a Client and tracks them by a separate ID nobody else uses. None of these are wrong. They're all partial. And the only thing holding them together is a person who knows, from experience, that the Acme Corp in Salesforce is the same entity as Acme Corporation Inc. in NetSuite and acme-corp in Linear. That person is the business object layer. They just don't know it yet.
The Definition
Customers. Projects. Contracts. Invoices. Orders. Assets. Employees. Tickets. The nouns of your business.
Every one of them needs four things to function as a real object instead of a scattered set of records.

Not "the team." A role. Someone whose job description says they're accountable for the integrity of this object across every system that touches it.
Where is this thing in its lifecycle? Prospect, active, at-risk, churned. Draft, signed, executed, closed. Not stored in five tools with five different vocabularies.
A customer has contracts. A contract has invoices. An invoice has line items tied to products. If those connections only exist in someone's head, you don't have a system. You have a person.
Where It Breaks
We know the Acme Corp in one system is the Acme Corporation in another because we've been doing this for three years and we remember the merger. We translate. We compensate. It's exhausting, but it works.
AI doesn't translate. It executes against whatever it sees. Point an agent at your CRM and ask it to flag at-risk customers, and it works with the CRM's definition of customer and the CRM's definition of at-risk. Both may be wrong, incomplete, or contradict what finance and support already know.
The model isn't the problem. The model is doing exactly what you asked.
The problem is that there's no shared object to ask about. This is why so many AI pilots feel impressive in the demo and useless in production. The demo runs against one clean system. Production runs against the actual business, where the same entity has six identities and nobody's sure which one is real.
The Hidden Cost
It looks like data analysts spending half their time reconciling records across systems before they can answer a question.
Customer success managers build their own spreadsheets because no system gives them the full picture of an account.
It looks like a CFO who can't get a clean revenue report without two weeks of back-and-forth between teams that define revenue differently.
A launch slips because product and finance had different definitions of what counted as a shipped project.
Mostly, it looks like leadership doing translation work that should have been done by the system.
